freedom

Nov 24, 2015

Hopefully you find the time in the next day or two to savour this inspiring talk on freedom given last weekend by Fr. Julian Carron at the University of Notre Dame. The text is available at this link and the video at the same link and also below. I found it most helpful to watch and read at the same time.

Here is one of the inspiring paragraphs:

“As time has passed, it’s become clear that the absence of ties and constraints is not enough to be truly free. In fact, that lack leads to the atrophy and eventual paralysis of freedom, because freedom needs something other – other people – to set it in motion; it needs to be motivated by something attractive, and for it to be fully realized, it needs a sufficient reason. Otherwise, the trajectory of freedom will be aimless wandering as Kerouac wrote: “‘We gotta go and never stop going till we get there.’ ‘Where we going, man?’ ‘I don’t know but we gotta go.’”
