a new deed

Today’s gospel passage is a striking and welcome reminder of how God’s way of living and working with humans is not our of working and living with ourselves.

Thanks be to God.

We humans are pretty hard not only on each other but also on ourselves.

The account of the woman caught in adultery is a particularly shocking example. The people were ready to stone her to death. What about the man? Where was he?

This scripture passage is full of people seeking refuge in outdated, unjust and culturally cruel legislation.

It’s easy to get caught up in the politics of the predicament and focus on the wrongs and rights of people who find themselves in hot water. But let’s look deeper – to the action of Jesus in the midst of this mess.

Jesus brings a new approach. The woman was convinced that her life was over but Jesus makes this the first day of her new era showing her love and giving her abundant life.

She now has a way to move forward, through raging waters, possible only by the love of her saviour.

Unfortunately those who hid in the crowd happy to point the finger and throw stones remained trapped in their deadly programming.

Thus says the Lord,
who made a way through the sea,
a path in the great waters;…
…No need to recall the past,
no need to think about what was done before.
See, I am doing a new deed,
even now it comes to light; can you not see it?
Yes, I am making a road in the wilderness,
paths in the wilds.

  1. Isaiah was the reading that spoke to me today John, “do not cling to events of the past or dwell on what happened long ago”! That God is so willing and ready to forgive me for the litany of sins that litter my past sometimes is hard to fathom.. especially when I find myself reciting them from time to time.
I hope that the woman who was accused was able to walk free into her life, leaving behind the trauma of what happened that day.
Thanks be to God that we have these beautiful scriptures to remind us of His Mercy and Love.
