Leo on Augustine

May 10, 2025

.

Over the past twenty-four hours I have been loving listening to a pope speaking naturally in English.

Pope Leo is an Augustinian, living the charism of 4th-5th-century Augustine of Hippo.

This morning I received a message from a community of Augustinian Nuns in Venice Italy whose company I have enjoyed in recent years. Their comment: “Our joy is overflowing. At the same time we feel all the responsibility to support him with our prayer.”

Sisters, we’re praying with you,

Perhaps the best-know of the writings of Saint Augustine is his Confessions which includes his most quoted inspiration: “You have made us for yourself O God, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”

In 2012 then Father Bob Prevost reflected on the timelessness of Augustine’s Confessions which is still in print (and free audiobook) at this link.

You might appreciate this three-minute clip of now Pope Leo (in English!) introducing us to Augustine.

  1. Thanks for posting this John, Leo’s fluency with simple English certainly helps our immediate comprehension. Have copied link to several interested friends.

    • Thank you Fr. John – the audiobook will be useful while on the road driving to work and commuting in train (and the short introduction as well) – is it okay if I make an offline copy of the audio book? Thanks

I wonder what he would say about his Mum?

Blessed Mothers Day to each and all!

  4. Thanks John. My joy is mirroring that of the nun’s you have referenced. Absolutely power packing our prayers of Gratitude and support to Heaven in our small Rosary Group for Pope Leo. I also loved this reflection on Augustine and will be forwarding this link to others to enjoy. Blessings in abundance.
