love

Today’s first reading is the magnificent hymn of love from St. Paul’s first letter to the people of Corinth.

I recall once meeting with a couple to prepare their marriage ceremony. They were insistent that there be no religious readings, certainly nothing from the bible. I wasn’t sure how to respond and asked what readings they would like. They replied that they both liked the popular poem about love which included the line “love is always patient and kind and lasts forever”

I have always like the King James translation of this beautiful hymn, rich in poetry conveying the power and depth of the meaning. “Now I see through a glass darkly, but then I shall see face to face.” is one of the most beautiful phrases ever penned.

The video below has British Prime Minister reading this beautiful hymn at Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997.
