I’m in heartland USA at present for a couple of weeks break and a little work including Sunday Masses in a local parish, a bit of writing (more on this later in the week) and last Sunday evening’s Ponderings in the Pub session with a diverse group of enthusiastic locals.
The diversity of those gathered was both visible (ranging in age from teenagers to one woman of 100 years) and evident in conversation (both political and religious extremes).
But most inspiring was the unifying power of faith, transcending differences to re-focus on Christ as the centre of all existence.
This kind of session, both one-off’s, small parish missions, and retreats have become the heart of my priestly ministry. While parish ministry and formal chaplaincies have the advantage of the rhythm of regular contact with a particular community, my Diocesan Missioner appointment makes me available to a wide spectrum of invitations and opportunities.
Also in these weeks I’m taking a good break and enjoying glorious fall (autumn) days with a view across a little lake, some good novels and good company.
Always on the lookout for good fiction. You might like to share what you are reading in comments below…
