This Sunday Pope Francis will proclaim two of his papal predecessors, John XXIII and John Paul II to be saints. Note the careful wording of that sentence since the church and the pope cannot make saints. Only Christ makes saints. All the church and the pope can do is be aware of what Christ has accomplished in the life of a pilgrim and announce that fact to the world. Thanks to the internet and social media it is possible for us to follow Sunday’s celebrations online. You might like to check out the following links:
Most people think of the Ascension of Jesus as being a ‘departure’ moment. Jesus was here and now he is gone. We imagine Jesus going up into the clouds and the disciples waving farewell from below.
This is an unhelpful image.
It is essential that we understand what does happen and what does not happen in the Ascension event.
It would be easy to wrongly think that in his ministry showed us how to build the city of God on earth, and now he has gone and the mission is left to us.
