a priest – 65 years

Jun 29, 2016

As I write it has just passed midnight in New Zealand on the early morning of 29 June, the Solemnity of Peter and Paul, and the day on which Pope Emeritus Benedict was ordained to the priesthood 65 years ago.

It is unfortunate that most people have never read anything that the emeritus pope has written. Some of his writing is the most profound and easily-readable sacred writing in recent centuries.

At the time of his resignation three years ago I wrote a brief piece which the Christchurch Press generously published (with little alteration apart from the title). I share it again today to give readers a chance to appreciate some  of his wisdom. You can read it at this link.

And as you read you might also offer a prayer for this wise and holy man as he marks this milestone.

Ad multos annos!
