.
There are a few gospel passages which come to mind when Jesus warns people against asking for signs.
Today to the court official seeking a cure for his son: “so you will not believe unless you see signs?” To the Pharisees (Mt 12:38-39) Jesus responds that it is a wicked generation that asks for a sign.
And today and everyday I’m asking for signs from God, for evidence.
It’s not that I am a doubter,,, and of course Thomas often named the doubter was really anything but a doubter.
Little children don’t need signs and evidence. Toddlers will accept as fact anything the trusted parent tells them. No proof needed.
But Thomas wasn’t a child. And neither am I.
It was right for Thomas to admit that he would not be able to believe unless he experienced the risen Jesus for himself. Of course it was all very well for his mates who did believe, but only because they themselves had experienced Jesus risen a week earlier.
Mature faith requires evidence and we are wise to ask for it..
And Jesus both in the gospel accounts and today is eager to provide evidence for anyone like me who asks.
Try it.
Just ask.

Thank you for this new perspective on Thomas. I’ve been in a time of discernment, and that is exactly what you are seeking from God – signs. I was also reflecting that there is also a time in the seeking when you step out in faith. You pick up your mat and begin the first tentative step in the direction you feel the signs are asking you to go.
