I was privileged to be taught by Jesuits, first at Holy Cross College in Mosgiel then in the US for post-graduate studies. These were remarkable men who did not fit easily into any artificial or superficial priestly mould. They were passionate men, intelligent men, men who were not afraid to stand with and for Christ.

I was delighted some years ago when serving at Our Lady of Victories parish in Sockburn Christchurch when a young parishioner took the step to enter Jesuit life. A few years later I was present when he took vows in Sydney and he will be ordained a priest this Saturday 2 June 2018 11.00am at St. Mary’s pro Cathedral in Christchurch.

Rob has lived away from Christchurch for many years and as a result many of his friends will not be able to be present on Saturday. This gives us locally an opportunity to fill the pro-Cathedral in support of Rob and to pray with him as he takes this step.

I encourage especially parents to bring their children. The ordination ceremony is powerful and does not need translation. The central moments speak loudly while often being carried out in silence. Just tell your child that a man is being ordained as a priest and the rest will make sense to them.
