Due to a technical hiccup I’m not able to record today’s gospel. My apologies.

Instead I offer the Gospel reading for Friday, split for a meditative reading.

Matthew 6:19-23

Jesus said to his disciples:
Even the opening of so many Gospel readings. so often overlooked and skipped as an insignificant intro, is significant. Read that again. Jesus said! Jesus is speaking. When I realise this I am ready and eager to listen and to hear.
Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moths and woodworms destroy them and thieves can break in and steal.
Too often in recent centuries we have ignored this clear teaching and focussed perhaps on issues of sexual morality about which Jesus said little. Too often the Church wines and dines the wealthy in the hope of catching the scraps from the rich man’s table. While we might speak Gospel truth to those who struggle with sexuality and sexual expression, we are more often caught ignoring the immorality of the capitalist. Storing up earthly treasure has become a natural pastime and a religious pre-occupation. Yet (as we say) you can’t take it with you!
But store up treasures for yourselves in heaven, where neither moth nor woodworms destroy them and thieves cannot break in and steal.
People put their money where their passions are. But is it also true that people put their passion with their earthly treasure.
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Amen.
