.
It is difficult to hear the Passion narrative of Jesus beginning at the Last Supper and detailing events through to his burial without being a bit frustrated at Jesus’ calmness in the face of suffering, torture and even execution.
If Jesus had evaded those who sought to kill him or spoken a few words in his own defence there surely would have been nothing lost. Such steps of self-preservation would have been understandable and acceptable.
But Jesus hardly speaks and does not react to the growing voices speaking against him.
But then through his three-year ministry he doesn’t respond to the good that is said about him either,
What freedom.
I’ve been quoting Mel Robbins a bit recently. Mel is an American author, podcast host, and former lawyer and is best known for her book entitled The Let Them Theory.
She writes:
The fact is, it is impossible to control someone else’s thoughts. Therefore, fearing what other people think, or trying to control their thoughts, is a complete waste of your time.
You will never feel in control of your life, your feelings, your thoughts, or your actions until you stop being consumed with or trying to control what other people think about you.
So, and this is her whole point, so LET THEM!
Again, what freedom.
Such freedom is not achieved through human discipline but by knowing that we are loved, as and how and where we are.
Living in this confidence brings the freedom we seek.

A lovely song says –
“No fear in life, no fear in death”
that sounds like freedom to me!
